Would you like to learn Finnish at your own pace and study whenever it suits you? A self-study Finnish course can be a flexible way to improve your Finnish alongside work, studies or family life.
At Waltari Education, you can choose between two online self-study options: Basic Finnish Club for beginners and YKI Club for learners who want to develop their Finnish skills and prepare for the YKI test.
Both courses are designed by a qualified Finnish language teacher and allow you to study Finnish online wherever you are.
Why choose a self-study Finnish course?
Learning Finnish does not always have to mean attending lessons at a fixed time every week. Online self-study gives you more freedom to decide when and where you study.
A structured course can also make independent learning easier. Instead of trying to find suitable exercises and materials yourself, you can follow ready-made learning content and focus on making progress.
Basic Finnish Club – Finnish for beginners
If you are just starting to learn Finnish, Basic Finnish Club is designed for you.
The course takes you from the very beginning and helps you build a strong foundation in everyday Finnish. You can study independently and progress through the lessons at your own pace.
Basic Finnish Club includes 39 lessons and three months of access to the course materials. It is suitable for beginners at approximately A0–A1.2 level, so you do not need any previous knowledge of Finnish to get started.
YKI Club – Practise Finnish and prepare for the YKI test
If you already know some Finnish and want to improve your skills, YKI Club offers structured self-study practice with a particular focus on the skills needed in the YKI test.
The club includes practice in all four areas of the YKI test: speaking, writing, reading and listening.
The exercises help you practise Finnish regularly and become more familiar with the types of tasks and communication situations you may encounter in the YKI test.
YKI Club is especially suitable for learners who already have some basic Finnish skills and want a flexible way to continue studying independently.
Which Finnish self-study course should I choose?
If you are a complete beginner or still building your basic Finnish skills, Basic Finnish Club is the best place to start.
If you already understand some Finnish and your goal is to improve your language skills or prepare for the YKI test, YKI Club is likely the better option.
You can also combine self-study with private Finnish lessons. Private lessons give you individual guidance and opportunities to practise Finnish with a teacher, while self-study helps you keep learning between lessons.
How often should I study Finnish?
Regular practice is usually more effective than studying for several hours only occasionally. Even 15–30 minutes of focused Finnish practice several times a week can help you build a consistent learning routine.
One of the advantages of a self-study Finnish course is that you can adapt your learning to your own schedule. Some weeks you may have more time to study, while during busy periods you can do shorter exercises and continue when you have more time again.
The most important thing is to make Finnish a regular part of your week.
